Sauternes-best Bordeaux wine according to users

Is the best Sauternes wine in Bordeaux?

It comes as a surprise to anyone who knows me as I think so-I fight wines of Sauternes and Barsac in the wine trade ever since I discovered them in 1983. Certain professionals may also like to agree that the Chateau d'yquem is one of the best wines in the world, not to mention only in Bordeaux.

What will come as a surprise is that I believe I can prove it-and I speak not only about the Chateau d'yquem! It may surprise you that you might have helped me, especially if you have used a part of the online program is called Cellartarcker.

Eric le Vine has created this wonderful part of the cellar management program used now online by thousands of wine lovers. They use it to track your wines in their basements, value them and, above all, for the purposes of this article, to write tasting notes. There are nearly one and a half million wine tasting notes covering wines from over 550 regions around the world.

The really interesting bit is that users are encouraged to give credits for each wine they taste. The site considers effective precisely what people think about all the fine wines and wines from every wine region in the world! The consumer has become a critic!

What seems now Cellartrackers wine enthusiasts of Sauternes? -They love it, of course! They prefer the Pauillac, St. Julien, Pessac-Leognan, Pomerol, St Emilion Grand Cru, Margaux and St Estephe. Here are figures from mid May 2011:

Sauternes-8,014 notes with an average score of 92.7 points

Barsac-987 notes, 91.5 points

Pauillac-16,874 notes, 91.0 points

St Julien-12,473 notes, 89.7 points

Pessac-Leognan-9,087 notes, 89.8 points

Pomerol-6,624 notes, 90.1 points

St Emilion Grand Cru-15,054 notes, 90.1 points

Margaux-9,748 notes, 89.9 points

St. Estephe-7,468 notes, 89.8 points

In fact, scoring champion Sauternes and Barsac almost every wine region in the world with the exception of Burgundy Grand Crus, Hermitage, Quarts de Chaume, Barossa range and some small Italian regions. All these regions have a much greater concentration of top wines and much less less wine in them.

It is no surprise to me! For nearly 30 years, I have hosted Sauternes and red Bordeaux tests around the world. Almost without fail, giving a SIP of Sauternes and Barsac a much bigger smile on peoples faces.

Some of us might not want to admit publicly that we like sweet wine but the Cellartracker figures show that when we are asked to quantify our experiences we place the Sauternes and Barsac at the top of the pile!

Bill Blatch has lived and worked in Bordeaux in nearly 30 years. He is widely respected throughout the world for its annual report in Bordeaux and recognized as one of the world's foremost experts on the wines of Bordeaux.
