Red wine: some interesting facts for health

Not many of us can resist the temptation of a single glass of a but rich and velvety red wines. More so if it is the absolutely divine Australian Shiraz!

There are a lot of conflicting information on whether drinking wine is good or bad for health. Just like the endless debate over the health benefits of coffee and tea, wine also had its share of dissidents over the years. It has swung back and forth from is very good for your health not as good for health and has now finally settled in a State of neither this there.

For hundreds of years was red wine a form of medicine that acted as a digestive aid, as a measure of apathy and diarrhea and as a pain killer, especially relieve childbirth pains. It was also used, as an antiseptic to treat infected wounds. It is in fact the oldest registered medicine in human history.

It was only much later in the mid-19th to early 20th century that wine was considered not to be so beneficial to health and that it also might have some ill effects.

This was due to the extensive research done at that time the effects of alcohol on the human body. Recent research, however, revealed the benefits of a phenolic compound, Resveratrol, found in fairly large quantities in the skins of grapes.

Resveratrol acts as an antioxidant that may prevent damage cells. However, a large proportion of this compound in the blood because remain inactive in the liver and gut. So, experts is a very slow sipping red wine, makes it possible to remain in the mouth for a while before swallowing. This helps it to be absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth, resulting in very high levels of Resveratrol concentration.

Red wine, taken in moderation marginally reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases by preventing the formation of blood clots in the blood vessels. It is also said to be generally favourable in overall mortality.

So, the key to enjoying your wine in moderation. Moderate alcohol consumption may involve on average about 4 ounces of wine. But this may vary depending upon genetics, gender, age, body building and weight. Other aspects, such as pre-existing disease, medication, and if the intake of wine, along with food, etc., play a role in determining what is "moderate" for each individual. And what is moderate for a man may well be too large for a woman that women tend to absorb alcohol much faster than men.

The next time you find your Shiraz, pausing to assess where you are within reasonable limits, or downing a for many. Tease your taste buds with little Shiraz everyday and you can maintain good health and strength for a long time. Pay them too much and you may have problem on your hands!
