Malvasia Bianca grape
Today's article is about a wonderful fruity grape varietal Malvasia Bianca (pronounced Mal-eh-ZEE-ah Bee-AHN-Kah), again from Italy. Malvasia is genetically the same as the more widely known Muscat Canelli or Muscat Blanc grape must. The Format of this wine can vary from simple to full-flavoured, dry to sweet, low to high alcohol. It is sometimes considered a sparkling wine.
In this article we will discuss one of these newly emerging Italian varietals in the Temecula Valley Wine country. Malvasia Bianca is a member of an ancient, highly regarded Greek family of grapes vinified in a variety of styles throughout Italy. Malvasia Bianca is one of the most cultured, light varieties in Italy and the world. On the islands of Sardinia and Sicily makes it rare, rich and wonderfully aromatic passito wines.
Sweet or dry, Malvasia Bianca offers wonderful aromas and flavors of honey and ripe PEAR with tips for Netherlands allspice. Round, green fruity flavours and a plush texture lead to a finish which is determined by the residual sugar and basement treatment. The lightest versions offer a clean, complete with sharp, while the elderly on small BARRELS can display light tannins and a little vanilla. Sweeter, more rich versions remain at taste. Couple of Malvasia Bianca with pork, rich cheeses or enjoy itself. Other interesting foodstuffs times with this wine is Seafood antipasta dishes (prawns, scallops and Octopus dressed with lemon and oil) and grilled vegetables for lighter wines. Grilled fish with small Provençal-style sauces pair with mellower wines. Dessert wines just need a simple almond biscotti (no chocolate please) dipping into wine, real Sicilian cannoli or an Apricot cake or pie plum filling with a Marzipan pastry crust.
Malvasia is widely planted in Italy and around the world. It performed best where there is good exposure to the Sun and where the soil to drain thoroughly. Other than dessert wine varietals, Malvasia wines age well and should be consumed quickly.
